Alex's enthusiasm and love for the musical diversity of the Balkans grew continuously; the borders of the countries set no limits to music for him. For Alex, strong traditions, diverse influences, and curiosity and openness to new things were the heart of Balkan music.

This led to the founding of the Ostbeatbend in 2012.

Alex sat at the drums of the Ostbeatbend until 2018, when he had to hand over the position to Marcel for health reasons.

Alex Zechbauer passed away in February 2020.
